About us

Our Department of Antiquities was established in 2010, bringing together within a single structure the disciplines related to the study of antiquities that had previously been organised in different departments. This integration has encouraged exchanges and interactions among different fields that study the ancient world from archaeological, historical, philological-literary, epigraphic, and linguistic perspectives. Currently, more than seventy teaching staff members belong to the Department, making it one of the largest and most prominent structures in the international academic landscape. The Department encompasses many different disciplinary fields, spanning geographically from the Western world to the Near and Middle East and chronologically from Prehistory to the Byzantine period, extending into the Middle Ages.

Facilities

The Department is organised into three Sections: Archaeology; Greek and Latin Philology; and History, Epigraphy, and Topography (Ancient Near East and Mediterranean). Our research laboratories are dedicated to research and teaching activities. The Department also hosts a large specialized library with a collection of approximately 150,000 volumes and journals, organised into four thematic areas located both inside and outside our main campus: Archaeology, Classical and Byzantine Philology, Palethnology, and Ancient History and Topography. Finally, our Department includes our archaeological museums which are part of the Sapienza Museum Network: the Museo dell’Arte Classica, the Museo delle Origini, the Museo del Vicino Oriente, and the Museo delle Antichità Etrusche e Italiche.

Teaching

The Department offers two Bachelor’s degree programmes taught in Italian: one in the archaeological field (Scienze archeologiche) and one in Classical philological and literary studies (Lettere classiche), as well as two Master’s degree programmes in the same areas (respectively Archeologia and Filologia, Letterature e Storia del Mondo Antico). In English, the Department offers the Bachelor’s degree programme in Classics and, in collaboration with Unitelma Sapienza, the Master’s degree programme in Classical Archaeology. The Department is also home to two PhD programmes, which are Archeologia and Filologia e Storia del Mondo Antico, and we also have the Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni Archeologici. Together with the Faculty of Architecture, the Department organizes the Master’s programme in Architettura per l'Archeologia.
