Archaeological fieldwork constitutes one of the core areas of research activity of the Dipartimento di Scienze dell’Antichità. Faculty members and researchers of the Department direct and participate in excavation campaigns and fieldwork projects at a range of archaeological sites in Italy and abroad. These activities reflect Sapienza’s long-standing tradition of field research and concern archaeological contexts spanning a broad chronological range -from Prehistory to the Middle Ages- across different areas of the Mediterranean as well as other regions of Europe, Asia, and Africa.
Activities include stratigraphic excavations, landscape surveys, and the study of monumental and settlement contexts, carried out in collaboration with institutions responsible for the protection of cultural heritage and with Italian and international research partners. Through these missions, the Department contributes to the historical reconstruction of the investigated sites, the study of material culture, and the publication and dissemination of research results.
A number of these projects is conducted within the framework of Sapienza’s Grandi Scavi program, which for over forty years has supported archaeological missions at sites of particular scientific significance and has promoted long-term research programs led by members of the University.
