Sapienza ranked first in the world in Classics and Ancient History for the sixth consecutive year

World University Rankings

For the sixth consecutive year, QS World University Rankings by Subject has confirmed Sapienza University of Rome as the world leader in Classics and Ancient History, with an overall score of 97.8 out of 100 (including a perfect 100/100 in Academic Reputation).

This is an outstanding achievement, the only case in Italy of a first-place global ranking in an academic subject ahead of renowned institutions worldwide. In Europe, only two other countries hold similar world-leading positions.

Equally remarkable is the result achieved in Archaeology, which ranks 7th worldwide. This means that the Department of Antiquities has two subjects among the global top ten, both also ranked first in Italy.

More broadly, Sapienza’s Humanities area performs at a very high level in this widely recognized international ranking, and the University confirms its leading position in Italy in terms of the number of subjects ranked among the global top 50.

Nunzio Quacquarelli, President of QS, stated:

“This year’s results for Italy highlight a higher education system of depth, global visibility, and highly distinctive strengths. Universities such as Bologna and Sapienza demonstrate the enduring value of public institutions, while Sapienza’s continued leadership in Classics and Ancient History for the sixth consecutive year represents sustained global excellence in a field deeply connected to the country’s intellectual and cultural heritage.

At the same time, the results highlight structural challenges facing the Italian higher education sector. For Italy, the challenge is not only to preserve long-standing strengths, but to further develop them through continued investment in research capacity, international collaboration, talent attraction and retention, and a broader dissemination of excellence across institutions and disciplines.”
