The project involves the functional study of basalt and andesite tools recovered from the high-altitude open-air site of Shanggagang (Middle Paleolithic, 200,000 years ago), as well as the functional study of trachyte, flint, and quartz tools from Yunnan Province, also studied by Prof. Hao and his research group. These come from two cave sites—Tianhuadong Cave (Middle Paleolithic, 95,000–50,000 years ago) and Yanfangdong Cave (Upper Paleolithic, 27,000–15,000 years ago)—and one open-air site, Xiajisha (Lower Paleolithic, 27,000–15,000 years ago).
