The Department of Antiquities conducts research devoted to the study of societies and cultures from Prehistory to the Middle Ages and stands as one of the leading centers for Classical studies at both national and international level, as reflected in Sapienza’s top positions in major global subject rankings. Its research is grounded in an interdisciplinary approach that integrates the study of the production, transmission, and circulation of knowledge in ancient societies; the investigation of writing practices and of the processes through which written documentation was disseminated and preserved; the analysis of historical and social dynamics as well as political and religious structures; and the examination of historical landscapes, settlement systems, and material culture. These areas are complemented by a strong focus on processes of cultural interaction and on the transmission and reception of antiquity in later periods. Research activities are developed through shared projects and interconnected lines of inquiry across different disciplinary fields, and encompass a wide range of contexts extending from the ancient Mediterranean to other regions of Europe, Asia, and Africa. The integration of expertise and the organization of research around cross-cutting thematic axes constitute a distinctive feature of the Department’s scholarly tradition, reflecting a coherent cultural vision supported by a solid research strategy.
The Department is actively involved in numerous national and international research projects, including initiatives funded within European research programs. It promotes archaeological missions and fieldwork activities and fosters scientific collaborations with universities and research institutions in Italy and abroad. Participation in international research networks, together with the presence of specialized research infrastructures, strengthens the international dimension of its scholarly activity and supports the training of early-career researchers.
The designation as a Department of Excellence attests to the quality and continuity of the Department’s research and supports the further development of its research activities, field missions, and international collaborations.
The results of the Department’s research are reflected in a substantial body of internationally recognized scholarly publications, participation in editorial programs and specialized series, the organization of conferences and seminars, and the promotion of public engagement initiatives aimed at the dissemination and enhancement of cultural heritage.
