The aim of this project is to present the fragments of the writings of Eratosthenes of Cyrene online in an accessible and easily searchable format. A critical edition of the Greek text is provided for each fragment, alongside an English translation and a detailed commentary. The site has advanced search functions.

Eratosthenes was one of the most famous scientists of antiquity. He studied in Athens before moving, in the mid-third century BC, to Alexandria, the cultural centre of the Hellenistic world, where he spent the rest of his long life working and studying in the library. His wide-ranging interests are well known: he was renowned for his work in astronomy, mathematics, geography, philosophy, chronology, history, philology and grammar, as well as being a celebrated poet.

The database is regularly updated with new material. We are currently adding fragments on philological, linguistic and chronographic topics; later we will deal with Eratosthenes’ other fields of activity.
