The joint Mission of the Institut National du Patrimoine (INP) and the University of Rome «La Sapienza» in Carthage (MAC), co-directed by Mounir Fantar (INP) and Lorenzo Nigro (Sapienza), has been active since 2021 and is supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Ministry of University and Research.
The investigation aims to provide new stratigraphic, chronological, and material data to reconstruct the history of the ancient city and its funerary areas, with particular attention to the Phoenician-Punic period (9th-2nd century BC).
The INP-Sapienza Carthage Project involves the archaeological investigation of two sites where the important Phoenician-Punic necropolises of Dermech and the Odeon are located.
The research, excavation, and restoration activities, in addition to being an opportunity to train young Tunisian and Italian archaeologists, are integrated with and interact with the primary objectives of enhancing and making accessible the heritage of the city of Carthage, which continues to be one of the most important tourist hubs in Tunisia and was inscribed by UNESCO on the World Heritage List in 1979.
