This project aims to build a map of primary emotions (according to the most widespread psychological classifications, love, joy, surprise, anger, sadness, and fear) from Roman times to modern ones, with attention to different fields. A first step will be the construction of a lexicon of passions, in the form of a specialized handbook. This lexicon will be focused on Roman culture, and its reception in Medieval and thought, and enriched by images of ancient art and archaeology from the Museo Nazionale Romano. All references, both to texts and images, will be accessible on the project website. Other outcomes, all published on the website, include in person and online seminars and conferences, among which there has been one on fear (feb. 2025) and another on pleasure and pain (oct. 2025).
