Il sito di Tell es-Sultan e, più in generale, l’Oasi di Gerico hanno attirato pellegrini e viaggiatori fin dall’antichità, in quanto uno dei principali luoghi santi della Palestina e sede, sin dal I secolo d.C., di una fiorente comunità cristiana di origine gentile. Il luogo è menzionato dal Pellegrino di Bordeaux nel 333 d.C., così come dai pellegrini Egeria (381–384 d.C.), Paola (nobile romana, 404 d.C.), dall’arcidiacono Teodosio (530 d.C.) e dal Pellegrino Anonimo di Piacenza (570 d.C.), ognuno dei quali ha lasciato una testimonianza scritta dei luoghi visitati e delle numerose chiese e monasteri presenti nell’oasi. La memoria del sito fu preservata anche durante il Medioevo, quando Gerico risultava in gran parte abbandonata a causa dell’insicurezza dell’area circostante. Con l’affermarsi della presenza islamica nella regione, la strada Gerusalemme–Gerico divenne una delle principali vie percorse per il pellegrinaggio alla Mecca, come riportano le fonti arabe. I viaggiatori europei continuarono a visitare Gerico tra il XVII e il XIX secolo d.C.
Nel 1997 il Dipartimento delle Antichità e del Patrimonio Culturale del Ministero del Turismo e delle Antichità (MOTA_DACH) dell’Autorità Nazionale Palestinese avviò un nuovo progetto di esplorazione e rivalutazione di Tell es-Sultan, in collaborazione con l’Università di Roma “La Sapienza” (1997–2015), concentrandosi principalmente sulle fortificazioni e sui quartieri residenziali della città dell’Età del Bronzo. Il contributo fondamentale della spedizione italo-palestinese è stato quello di proporre una periodizzazione complessiva del sito, riesaminando e armonizzando i dati prodotti da tutte le precedenti missioni di scavo.
