The 2025 excavation campaigns conducted by the Department of Ancient Sciences of Sapienza University of Rome in Regio VII, insula 12 of Pompeii are part of a three-year research project focused on textile production contexts in the Roman urban environment. Fieldwork, carried out between April–May 2025 and currently ongoing (October 2025), concentrates on the House of Camillus and the House of Narcissus, two complexes characterized by the coexistence of residential spaces and textile workshops. The project also involves A. Jaia and L. Ebanista for topographical surveys, while digital reconstruction is carried out by the team led by Prof. S. Muth at the Winckelmann Institute of Humboldt University of Berlin.
The main aim of the project is to reconstruct the architectural and functional phases of these complexes, with particular emphasis on the transformation of domestic spaces into productive areas following the earthquake of AD 62. Fieldwork has included preliminary cleaning operations, removal of modern deposits, and the identification of ancient floor levels, followed by detailed stratigraphic, architectural, and functional analysis.
The project is officially authorized through an archaeological research concession issued under Article 89 of the Italian Cultural Heritage Code (D.Lgs. no. 42/2004) by the Ministry of Culture – Department for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (DiT), Directorate-General for Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape.
Special attention is devoted to the study of production installations (basins, lead vats, working surfaces), water supply and drainage systems, and the associated material culture. These elements are crucial for reconstructing the textile chaîne opératoire and for understanding the economic dynamics of the district located behind the Forum.
The project is funded by the Grant Lumen Conscientiae 2025 and Grandi Scavi Sapienza 2025, and represents part of a broader multi-year research programme aimed at defining the topography of textile production in Pompeii and integrating archaeological data with advanced digital methodologies.
